Samsung blames content partner for unauthorized use of Dua Lipa’s image

Pop star Dua Lipa recently sued Samsung for $15 million, alleging that the company had used her image without permission to market its TVs.

Samsung has now pushed back against the claims. The company has blamed a third-party content partner for the unauthorized use.

Samsung seems open to settlement negotiations

In a statement provided to Billboard, Samsung says that Lipa's image was used in 2025 “to reflect the content of our third-party partners that is available on Samsung TVs.” The company further added that the image was “originally provided by a content partner for our free streaming service Samsung TV Plus.”

Samsung further added that it used the image after receiving “explicit assurance” from the partner that the permission had been secured from the rights holder, including for retail boxes. Based on this assurance, Samsung dies any allegations of intentional misuse.

The copyrights to the photo in question are owned by Lipa. The pop icon has claimed in the lawsuit that a cease and desist demand was sent to Samsung after the unauthorized use of her image was discovered in June 2025. Her lawyer's argue that Samsung has repeatedly refused to stop using her image “for its financial benefit.”

It's possible that some settlement may be reached between the parties. Samsung has shown a willingness to engage. The company has said in a statement that it remains open to a constructive resolution with Lipa's team.

This isn't the first time Samsung is dealing with such a claim. Brazilian football star Pelé had sued Samsung in 2016 for $30 million, claiming that a lookalike of him was used by the company in an advertisement. Samsung then entered into settlement negotiations with Pelé in 2018 following which the case was dismissed.
